10 Ways to Protect Your Skin From Sun Damage

There would be no life if there were no sun. It is not just us who depend on the sun; plants, animals, and other natural processes, get support from the sun. From the sun we get, energy, warmth and vitamin D. However, despite being a source of life, it can also cause a lot of damages, especially on our skins. The sun produces UV radiation that causes sunburns, brown spots and worse, the skin cancer. Luckily, there are numerous methods that we can use to protect ourselves from these harmful effects. These methods can be put into two broad categories; natural and use of sunscreen products. The following are 10 ways to protect your skin from sun damage.

1. Cover up


Among all the methods available, there is no better method than covering up. It is effortless, cheap and an efficient way. The best thing with covering up is that you are not required to use any chemicals or go for medications. Usually, the sun is hottest between 10 am to 4 pm in the evening. During this time of the day, try as much as possible to cover yourself. But if you usually spend most of your times when indoors, you will not need to cover yourself. The best covering method is wearing a hat. Also choosing of what wear is essential. Wear items of clothing that are lightly woven and are dark in color, as they absorb the harmful rays. Also, protect your ears, nose, and eyes.

2. Apply sunscreen


This is probably the most used method. Luckily, there are good qualities and affordable sunscreens products that have minimal side effects. The best sunscreen product should have a sun protection factor that is not below 15. To get the best results, apply a thick layer, to increase its effectiveness. Also, apply the sunscreen about 20 minutes before being exposed to the sun, and keep reapplying it. Another exposed part of the body are the lips; you can as well apply a lip balm that has a skin protection factor of at least 15. Do not be fooled by the weather. Did you know that even when it is cloudy, you are skin vulnerable to sunburns? Even on those cloudy and cools days remember to either apply a sunscreen or cover your body.

3. Cucumbers


Cucumbers are also an essential source of skin protection from sun damages. They are packed with nutrients, water, sulfate, potassium and Vitamin and C and A. these elements helps to protect your skin when you are under a scorching sun. Its effectiveness is in caffeic acid and Vitamin A, that combined produce a strong guard against harmful rays.

4. Go for alternative sources of Vitamin D


The primary source of vitamin D is the sun. However, it is not a must that you depend on the sun completely to get vitamin D. There are some alternative sources of vitamin D and, therefore, you have the option of reducing the amount of time you expose yourself to the sun. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for your health and are beneficial for your cells. Scientists say that omega 3 fatty acids, mitigates the development of cancerous changes in the body, after being exposed to the sun’s harmful rays. When you want to include them in your diet, eat more of wild salmon, berries, kidney beans and walnuts.

7. Astaxanthin



This is an algae based antioxidant that is very powerful and effective on your skin. Its primary source is from the algae. Algae use the astaxanthin to protect themselves from the harmful rays especially when their habitats are dry.
